What is Internet Safety

Internet Safety is protecting computers against viruses, spyware, malware, root kits, and key loggers. The first step in computer security is to follow the basic rules of computer security.

Rule - 1: Install all critical updates from Microsoft.

Every month Microsoft releases software updates that are designed to patch security theats in their operating systems.  Microsoft will release these updates on the second Tuesday of every month. All critical updates from Microsoft must be installed every month.

Rule-2: Install Anti-Virus Software.

Hackers create software programs called viruses designed to crash computers. Antivirus software is designed to create a level of protection around computers so these programs can’t get install.

Rule-3: Install Spyware/Malware Software.

Spyware software is designed to steal passwords, identity tehft, and create annoying pop-ups. Spyware software creates a shield around computers to prevent these programs from installing.

Rule - 4: Install a Firewall.

Windows XP and Vista both have built in firewall.  A firewall helps block filter internet traffic so harmful programs like spyware and viruses don’t have access to computers.  Firewalls also block hackers attempts to access your computer.

Step 5: Install a Second Internet Browser

The majority of spyware and viruses target Internet Explorer. When a computer becomes infected with spyware or a virus they are designed to keep Internet Explorer from access the internet. This is why we recommend installing Firefox, Chrome or Opera has a second browser.

Step 6: Disable Java Script

It seems that we are hearing more and more about how viruses and spyware are using Java script to launch attacks. You should change the browser setting to ask before running Java script or disable java script.

Step 7: Create a Backup of all Critical Files.

If you have tax information, school work, documents, email or other critical information on your computer create a backup. You can create a backup by using an external Hard Drive, flash drive or subscribe to an online backup service like Mozy. Backups should be weekly.

Step 8: Never open an email attachment from somebody you don’t know.

Almost all viruses infect computers through email attachments. You get an email that has an attachment that says something like funny, nude pics or something to get your attention. If you get an email from somebody you don’t know DON’T click on the attachment. Delete the email immediately.

Step 9: Don’t install programs off the internet.

The internet is full of website designed to trick you into download spyware and viruses. You might get a pop-up asking you to install a game or something that seems fun but the majority of these programs contain spyware. If you get a random pop-up from an internet site asking you to install something say “NO.”

Step 10: Turn on file extensions.

Viruses often try to hide themselves as .txt, .doc or .PDF documents. You see the file that looks like one of those files and think it is ok to open.  The file actually is a .exe file and your compter. If you see a file with a .exe file extension don't click on it.
