The subject of internet safety for kids in a very important one. This topic needs to discussed by parents in every home. Every year the internet evolves and changes and so do the safety challenges for children. What can parents do to keep kids safe online?
 
The first thing all parents need to do is to open a line of communication with their children. The best way to approach internet safety is to develop a plan on what to talk about. Write down everything you want to address and why you are addressing this issue. Parents who don't have the safety talk with kids may not understand what they are doing online or who they are talking to online. Kids today might not understand that they should or shouldn't be doing something online. This is very important for kids using social networking sites.
 
Kids today need to understand that everything posted on social networking sites is open to the world. Anything posted on these sites can be used against in a court of law. Remember the majority of the internet is public domain. All parents should advise their children the people has lost jobs for comments or pictures posted online.
 
Parents need to consider where in the house to put the family computer. The family computer should be in a open space where parents can see it and have easy access to it. Placing the computer is an open environment will make kids think what websites they are visiting and what they are doing online. When the computer are put in a kids bedroom or in the basement parents can't always see what kids are doing. Putting the computer is an isolated area will allows kids greater opportunity for doing something online they shouldn't be. When children know they cna't get caught browsing why not visit and do things online they should be doing.
 
The biggest thing parents can do for internet safety for kids is create offline activities. A new study indicated that kids today spend over 11 hours connected to the internet. Parents needs to find activities that don't involve computers. Look at sporting activities like playing baseball, software, basketball, or spending an hour or two at a local park. Parents should get involved in exercising with their children. A great family activity is bike riding. Have a family bike ride around the neighborhood or around a local park. This will give parents and kids great exercise and gets everybody out of the house.
 
Every parents knows that internet safety for kids isn't easy. Making small changes like placing the computer in the living room or playing with kids outside will greatly decreases the amount of threats they face online. These are just a few tips to help parents keep children safe online.
